Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities have identified the phone line used in extortion calls that threatened seven members of the city council, and local officials say they will keep security measures in place while considering a public awareness campaign.
Luis Herrera Quiam, the municipal general secretary, said the city would not lower its guard and would maintain security protocols. He also said officials are analyzing a new campaign to alert residents to the risk of extortion.
The calls were traced to a line originating at Plaza de la Comunicación in Mexico City, according to Quintana Roo Secretary of Government Cristina Torres Gómez.
Herrera Quiam noted that the national phone registry currently being compiled will be managed on a federal platform that municipal authorities will not have access to, limiting their ability to intervene in such cases.
He urged residents to report any extortion calls, saying it is not only about keeping statistics but also about obtaining results and attending to each case.
