PLAYA DEL CARMEN, QR. — The labor sector in Playa del Carmen is showing positive year-end indicators, driven by the December holiday season and a rebound in tourism activity, according to the Mexican Confederation of Workers (CTM) in the municipality.
The general secretary of the CTM in the destination, Luis Toribio Clavel, stated that the balance at the end of the year is favorable, following a low season that presented complications and began to reverse as December progressed. This behavior, he said, reflects a gradual improvement in the labor sector in Playa del Carmen, particularly in activities linked to tourism.
According to the union leader, the mood among the worker base has been positive, mainly due to the timely payment of year-end bonuses and the reactivation of events typical of these dates, such as holiday parties and family celebrations. These factors have contributed to boosting consumption and strengthening the labor sector in Playa del Carmen in the final stretch of the year.
Regarding hotel occupancy, Toribio Clavel indicated that it currently remains between 70 and 80 percent, a level that has allowed reactivating the demand for labor in various workplaces. However, he acknowledged that vacancies persist, as on average about 10 percent of staff positions in some hotels still need to be filled, a common situation during high tourist influx seasons within the labor sector in Playa del Carmen.
The union leader highlighted that the destination continues to be attractive for those seeking employment, due to the presence of hotel chains and tourism sector companies that maintain a constant offer of job positions. He added that, despite the recent low season, no layoffs were recorded among workers affiliated with the CTM.
He explained that this stability was possible thanks to agreements reached with companies, through which schemes such as so-called “solidarity days” were applied, allowing adjustment of work schedules without affecting staff permanence. When activity requires it, he specified, overtime is covered according to what is established by law, which has helped sustain the labor sector in Playa del Carmen.
Finally, Toribio Clavel expressed confidence that the December season and the start of the next year will consolidate the recovery, with benefits for both companies and the worker base, thus strengthening the labor sector in Playa del Carmen heading into 2026.
