The Ekinoxio Performing Arts Festival is celebrating its 11th edition in Playa del Carmen, coinciding with the spring equinox. This festival is a vibrant display of diverse artistic genres including theatre, performance art, dance, circus, and puppetry, all presented in various alternative spaces.

The festival is an independent, self-managed event that relies heavily on the involvement of the local community. It brings together producers, sponsors, venue owners, and artists to create a unique cultural experience. This year, the festival has expanded to include unconventional spaces in Tulum, incorporating more communities from the Riviera Maya region.

The event features over 15 professional companies and provides training workshops for both children and performing artists. In an effort to make the festival accessible to everyone, all performances are free of charge. Instead, a system of voluntary collaboration is implemented, encouraging attendees to contribute at the end of each show.

Despite receiving no support from the local administration, the festival continues to thrive due to the generous backing of sponsors. These sponsors provide essential resources such as transportation, accommodation, and food for the participating artists.
