Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The body of a homeless person was found Monday under a road bridge on Playa del Carmen Boulevard, prompting the city’s family development agency to reveal that between 25 and 30 people are living on the streets.
Deyanira Martínez Estrada, director of DIF Playa del Carmen, said outreach workers have offered temporary shelter to people without housing while trying to locate relatives, but many prefer to stay on the street. “Forcing them would mean violating their rights,” she said.
Martínez Estrada said the agency is coordinating with the Public Security Department’s GEAVIG unit, the Women’s Institute, and city council members. She said a protocol for responding to people in street situations is being drafted by the council’s Family Development and Vulnerable Groups Commission. Once the protocol is legally established, it will allow for a dedicated budget, she said.
