Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities in Playa del Carmen are expanding a free microchipping program for dogs, with a goal of registering more than 1,000 animals to improve pet identification and recovery.

The program, run by the municipal environmental department, aims to create a reliable and updated pet registry. During a recent event at the new municipal palace, officials implanted 100 microchips in dogs at no cost. So far, 250 dogs in the city have received the devices, and weekly clinics are planned across different neighborhoods.

The microchip is a small electronic device placed under the dog’s skin, containing a unique code linked to the owner’s information. After registration, owners receive an ID card, and the municipality keeps a database of the codes. If a lost dog is found, a special scanner can read the chip to quickly reunite the pet with its family.

To participate, owners must present their CURP (unique population registry code) and the dog’s vaccination record. The service is free to encourage widespread participation and promote responsible pet ownership.
