Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The city will open its first Punto de Vida on May 21, a dedicated space providing psychological support and medical testing for the LGBTQ+ community, according to the municipal director of Sexual Diversity, Ryan Espinosa.
The center is located in the Ejidal neighborhood at Avenida 100 with Calle 14 Norte. Espinosa said the goal for this year is to establish two such centers, and officials are already scouting additional locations.
The initiative aims to repurpose abandoned or deteriorated public booths, transforming them into safe spaces. The city has secured an agreement with the Red de Psicólogos de Quintana Roo (Network of Psychologists of Quintana Roo) to provide counseling, along with other partner organizations.
Beyond the Ejidal location, officials are working on a second Punto de Vida in the Nicte Ha neighborhood and hope to add more, including one in the Puerto Aventuras municipal district. However, Espinosa noted that the booths must be donated through the Playa del Carmen City Council.
The first center was obtained through a comodato (loan-for-use agreement) with the Secretariat of Social Justice and Citizen Participation.
