Playa del Carmen Demands Return of Biciplaya Bike-Share Program After Unauthorized Removal

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen has demanded the reinstatement of the Biciplaya bike-sharing program after the concessionaire removed the bicycles without authorization, potentially breaching its contract.

Agustín Aguilar Méndez, the city’s syndic, said the company Promourb, which operates the Playaparq parking meter system, has responded to the city’s official notice and requested a meeting. The meeting, expected before the end of July, will involve technical and legal teams from both sides.

“We received a reply and they are requesting a meeting with the technical and legal team,” Aguilar Méndez said. The meeting will include members of the City Council’s Mobility Commission, as well as officials from the Treasury, the Mayor’s Office, and Transit.

The syndic emphasized that the city’s goal is not to revoke the concession but to restore the bike-share service for residents and visitors. “What we want is for Biciplaya to return,” he said.

The concession, which runs until 2033, requires Promourb to operate the bike-share program. The company removed the bicycles at the end of March without public notice, prompting criticism from the city council, which said it was not informed in advance.

It later emerged that Promourb had informed the former municipal mobility director, Juan Carlos Tun Centeno, about the removal in February, allegedly with his agreement. Tun Centeno initially denied knowledge but later justified the decision, citing the program’s lack of profitability. He was subsequently removed from his post.

City authorities are now working to determine the conditions under which Biciplaya can return to the streets of Playa del Carmen.
