Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is conducting load studies and circuit bypasses to end the recurring blackouts that have plagued this city since last week, with repairs expected to be completed within a day or two, according to state officials.
Cristina Torres Gómez, Quintana Roo’s secretary of government, blamed the power failures on high temperatures that have driven up energy consumption. She said she attended a meeting Tuesday with the CFE superintendent and Mayor Estefanía Mercado, where officials reported that additional equipment had been ordered to replace and reinforce existing infrastructure.
When a piece of equipment fails, CFE personnel must reroute the electrical circuit to isolate and repair it. During this bypass, they must split the load to avoid causing another breakdown, a process that takes time, Torres explained.
Over the past few days, electricians have measured loads and performed bypasses to better divide circuits and prevent transformers and wiring from overheating. With the new equipment, Torres estimated the work should be finished within two days.
