Plants displayed as Christmas gifts in Cancún with increased demand

Cancún, Mexico — The Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development has a program called “Huertos de Traspatio” (Backyard Gardens) to train citizens to create nurseries and achieve self-sustainability at home.

Many of these individuals have also established small nursery businesses, which participate in the event called “Expo Plantas de Ornato” (Ornamental Plant Expo). Over two and a half years since its creation, the event has reached 29 editions, with 12 of them occurring during 2025.

Josué Bonilla, General Director of Municipal Economic Development, indicated that there are two gardens in region 101 and region 220, and by January 2026, they plan to create six or seven more so that people can learn to implement these projects at home.

It is estimated that there are more than 30 nurseries in Cancún, but there could be over 100 that are not yet registered.

During this December, demand for plants has increased by at least 30%, as many people are choosing to give them as gifts. Nurseries across various points in the city anticipate good sales starting this fortnight.

On this topic, Jhony Velez Romero, in charge of the nursery at the Ka’Yok’ planetarium, recalled that during the health contingency, caring for plants was one of the activities that many people took up as an escape or entertainment, with ornamental plants of various types being in highest demand.

He commented that during this month, plant purchases increase by 30%, as many use them as gifts for friends and family during these holidays.

He assured that it is an activity where many people pay attention because it calms them, due to the concept of giving a chance at life and watching them grow with their care.

“It is a kind of emotional commitment to life, and gardening is quite therapeutic,” he affirmed.

Additionally, many people have started small vegetable gardens within their homes or patios, which unintentionally turned into businesses.

Regarding the Ornamental Plant Expo, it will resume activities in January 2026 with 12 editions already scheduled.
