Quintana Roo, Mexico — As the 2025 Atlantic and Caribbean Tropical Cyclone Season begins today, the Yucatán Peninsula stands fortified with emergency shelters, early warning systems, and coordinated response plans. Authorities in Quintana Roo and Yucatán have confirmed readiness, with over 800 cyclone shelters operational in Quintana Roo alone, including 81 designated for immediate activation.
Shelter Distribution and Preparedness Measures
Quintana Roo’s 81 first-response shelters are distributed across municipalities as follows:
- 27 in Benito Juárez
- 12 in Lázaro Cárdenas
- 8 in Othón P. Blanco
- 7 in Felipe Carrillo Puerto
- 6 in José María Morelos
- 5 each in Tulum and Bacalar
- 3 each in Puerto Morelos and Cozumel
- 2 in Isla Mujeres
Guillermo Núñez Leal, head of Quintana Roo’s State Civil Protection Coordination (Coeproc), stated that all first-response shelters have been inspected and are prepared for immediate use. He emphasized the administration’s focus on prevention under Governor Mara Lezama’s leadership.
In Yucatán, the state’s 1,217 temporary shelters include 29 coastal facilities reserved for rapid deployment by the state government. Hernán Hernández Rodríguez, Yucatán’s Civil Protection Coordinator (Procivy), confirmed ongoing coordination with federal agencies such as the National Water Commission (Conagua), the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA), the Mexican Navy, the National Guard, and municipal governments.
Forecasts and Public Alerts
The 2025 season is projected to bring:
- 7 to 9 tropical storms
- 3 to 4 Category 1 or 2 hurricanes
- 3 to 4 major hurricanes (Category 3–5)
Authorities urged residents to monitor official channels, including the Early Warning System for Tropical Cyclones (SIAT-CT), which issues color-coded alerts with corresponding safety instructions. The Yucatán State Monitoring and Alert Center is actively tracking the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico for potential threats.
Interagency Coordination
Federal and state agencies are conducting joint preparedness drills, with the National Civil Protection System ready to activate SIAT-CT if storms approach the peninsula. Hernández Rodríguez highlighted collaboration with academic institutions and business chambers to ensure a unified response.
Residents are advised to stay informed through government-approved platforms and heed evacuation orders if issued.
