Chetumal, Quintana Roo — More than 22,000 people attended the Fut Fest in Quintana Roo to celebrate Mexico’s victory over South Korea in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to state officials.

The event, held at the Explanada de la Bandera, drew over 6,000 attendees who watched the match in a family-friendly atmosphere. Governor Mara Lezama toured the venue, greeting families alongside Verónica Lezama, honorary president of the DIF system, and Othón P. Blanco Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández.

From early in the day, children, teenagers, and adults participated in 2-on-2 soccer tournaments, pull-up competitions, foot-tennis matches, and other recreational activities. A food pavilion offered a variety of options, and free popcorn was distributed to attendees.

“You have been wonderful. It’s a family atmosphere, no alcohol, with parents, moms, kids, and babies all enjoying together,” Lezama said, emphasizing that such events strengthen social fabric and contribute to peacebuilding.

Lezama noted that people from various neighborhoods in Chetumal and nearby communities attended, with transportation options provided to facilitate access.

During her interaction with the crowd, the governor exchanged predictions about the match outcome and even offered to give away soccer balls and jerseys to those who guessed the score correctly, drawing smiles and applause.

The World Cup festivities will continue on Wednesday, June 24, with a broadcast of the match between the Czech Republic and Mexico at 8:00 p.m., along with knockout-stage games as they are determined.
