Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — During the peak sargassum season, municipal authorities in Puerto Morelos have intensified beach cleanup efforts, collecting more than 1,400 tons of the macroalgae between April and June 2025. The objective is clear: to maintain the beaches in optimal condition for both residents and visitors to this tourist destination.
Support During Critical Season
Official reports indicate that the months of May through August mark the peak of sargassum season. To combat the phenomenon, the municipality has received support from the state government and the Mexican Navy (Semar), which conducts maritime containment operations using barriers and specialized sargassum-collecting vessels.
One such vessel recently collected over 400 tons of floating sargassum along the coastal stretch between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos, preventing it from reaching the shore.
Community and Hotel Sector Participation
Gerardo Rosas García, director of the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), reported that in addition to daily cleanup efforts, at least three extensive cleanup operations have been carried out. These efforts involved municipal personnel, Semar officers, and more than 100 workers from various municipal departments.
Special cleanup initiatives were also organized in specific areas, including beaches near The Fives hotel and a section of the El Cid resort, in coordination with the hotel sector.
Clean Beaches Sustain Tourism
Despite the persistent influx of sargassum along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Puerto Morelos has managed to keep its beaches in suitable condition, ensuring uninterrupted tourism activity. The strategic placement of anti-sargassum barriers has been key to minimizing the impact and preserving the destination’s appeal.
