Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Othón P. Blanco municipality is reviewing at least 800 burial plots at the Campos del Recuerdo cemetery as part of a regularization process aimed at clarifying the legal and physical status of the vaults.
Authorities warned that spaces failing to comply with regulations could be reclaimed by the municipality. According to the Coordination of Cemeteries and Funeral Homes, owners with pending payments or who cannot prove the legality of their vaults may face administrative procedures.
This measure is based on an update to the cemetery regulations implemented in 2023, with the goal of increasing control and preventing the abandonment of spaces.
At Least 500 Notices Issued for Structural Problems
In addition to outstanding debts, around 500 notices have been issued for structural issues: vaults with broken lids, visible deterioration, and even exposure of skeletal remains—a situation worsened by recent rains. Authorities are urging families to address these cases to avoid health and legal risks.
The municipality stated that the process is progressing gradually and that many people have voluntarily come forward to regularize their status before receiving notifications. The intention, they noted, is to give owners the opportunity to get up to date and retain their spaces, provided they meet the established requirements.
