Mérida, Yucatán — The Orquesta Típica Yukalpetén, one of Mexico’s most enduring traditional music ensembles, marked its 84th anniversary with a concert titled “Nuestra Orquesta, Nuestra Música” at the Palacio de la Música, celebrating the region’s trova tradition and cultural identity.
Under the direction of Pedro Carlos Herrera López, who has led the orchestra for two decades, the 90-minute program wove together memories, voices, and emotions across generations. Each piece resonated as an echo of the past alive in the present, accompanying troubadours and audience alike in a deeply meaningful evening.
Before the concert, Fidencio Briceño Chel, director of Museums and Heritage at the state Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta), spoke on behalf of Secretary Patricia Martín Briceño. He highlighted the orchestra as one of the “institutions that have brought light and great pride to our music, to our cultural heritage in Yucatán, the region, and all of Mexico.”
Briceño Chel noted that the songs and melodies performed by the orchestra represent the music that “is us,” the people of Yucatán, and that under Herrera’s leadership, “that typical quality has been innovated, constantly awakening in favor of our own,” contributing more to Yucatán’s cultural life.
Also attending were Adele Urbán Flores, director of the Palacio de la Música, and special guests Erik Ojeda Novelo and Arturo Turriza, members of the Real Orquesta Yucateca.
Founded in 1942 by then-Governor Ernesto Novelo Torres and initially led by maestro Daniel Ayala Pérez, the Orquesta Típica Yukalpetén has grown into a guardian and beacon of Yucatecan vernacular music. Since its debut in Mérida’s main square, the ensemble has performed on stages across Mexico, including the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and internationally, collaborating with legendary figures such as Armando Manzanero while reinventing itself without losing its roots.
“In each chord lives the memory of Yucatán; in each interpretation its heritage flourishes, and in each concert, like tonight, the pact between music and its people is renewed,” the orchestra said in a statement.
