shooting in playa del carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — One person was reportedly wounded in a shooting overnight in the heart of Playa del Carmen’s downtown tourist district, prompting a large response from municipal and state police.

The incident occurred on Calle 6 between 5th and 10th Avenues, according to initial reports. The location is a busy commercial block close to restaurants, bars, hotels and the pedestrian section of 5th Avenue.

Initial information indicated that one person had been struck by gunfire. However, authorities had not publicly disclosed the victim’s identity, age, nationality or medical condition as of Saturday morning. It was also unclear whether the person was attacked inside a business or on the street.

The overnight shooting was separate from another incident reported Friday at a hotel on Calle 26, where two tourists suffered non-life-threatening injuries in an apparent pellet gun attack. Police detained a suspect in that case.

Authorities have not released information about a possible motive, the suspected attacker or any arrests. Additional details are expected as the investigation continues.
