Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Oceanman Cozumel open water swimming competition kicked off its 10th anniversary edition Saturday at Chankanaab Natural Park, drawing more than 2,500 swimmers from roughly 20 countries.
The two-day event, held Aug. 1-2, has become one of the largest open water races in the Americas and a driver of sports tourism in the Mexican Caribbean.
Chankanaab Natural Park, managed by the Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC), hosted the start of the races. FPMC marketing director Badih Sleme Flores attended on behalf of general director Juanita Alonso Marrufo, accompanying competitors as they set off into the island’s clear waters and later taking part in the medal ceremony.
This year’s program features the Oceanman 10-kilometer race and the Half Oceanman 5-kilometer race as main events.
Organizers say the race highlights Cozumel’s status as the “Island of Sport” and supports the local economy by promoting active tourism.
The FPMC congratulated all participants and wished them success in the historic 10th edition.
