Oaxaca, Mexico — Adidas and designer Willy Chavarría face accusations of cultural appropriation and plagiarism following the release of their "Oaxaca Slip On" footwear, which allegedly replicates the traditional design of huaraches crafted by artisans in Villa Hidalgo Yalálag, Oaxaca. The controversy has sparked widespread condemnation, with Oaxacan authorities preparing legal action against the multinational sportswear brand.

Accusations of Unauthorized Use of Cultural Heritage

The disputed shoe, marketed as part of a collaboration between Adidas Originals and Chavarría, was promoted as a tribute to Mexican culture. However, Oaxacan artisans and officials argue that the design was copied without permission, and the community has not received any financial compensation.

Governor Salomón Jara Cruz confirmed that a formal complaint will be filed against Adidas and Chavarría, stating, "We will not allow anyone to profit from the work of our communities without their consent." The backlash intensified when it was revealed that despite bearing the name "Oaxaca," the shoes were manufactured in China and Vietnam rather than Mexico.

Social Media Outrage and Calls for Accountability

The dispute has ignited a heated debate on social media, with users sharing side-by-side comparisons of the traditional huaraches and Adidas’ new model. Critics accuse the brand of exploiting Indigenous craftsmanship for profit while bypassing the original creators.

A tweet by journalist Jaime Guerrero summarizing the allegations went viral, further amplifying demands for Adidas to issue a response and provide fair compensation to the affected artisans. The case has reignited discussions about the fine line between cultural inspiration and appropriation in the fashion industry.

The controversy underscores broader concerns about corporate responsibility and intellectual property rights in global fashion. As pressure mounts on Adidas and Chavarría to address the accusations, the outcome of Oaxaca’s legal challenge could set a precedent for future cases involving traditional designs.

No official statement has yet been released by Adidas or Chavarría regarding the allegations.
