Playa del Carmen’s Northern Entrance to Feature New Security Gate with Surveillance Cameras
Playa del Carmen is set to unveil a new northern entrance portal in the coming weeks, featuring high-tech surveillance systems as part of the city’s broader public safety initiatives. Municipal President Estefanía Mercado recently visited the construction site to oversee progress, confirming that the structure is expected to be completed within 45 days.
The 13-meter-tall gateway, will be built at the northern entrance to the city on Highway 307 between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. The structure will not only serve as a symbolic welcome point but will also integrate advanced security technology. The portal will be equipped with:
- High-tech surveillance cameras linked to the C4 security system
- Speed radars and speed reducers to enhance road safety
- Facial recognition technology for increased security monitoring
- RFID readers to track vehicle movements
A Landmark for Playa del Carmen
President Mercado emphasized that the project aims to improve accessibility, enhance urban aesthetics, and strengthen security at one of the city’s most important entry points.
“The main goal of this project is to build an iconic structure that represents the cultural and touristic identity of our city while also improving access, urban beauty, and road safety in this key area,” she stated.
Investment and Public Benefit
The construction, which is being funded through the Environmental Sanitation Financing Program, represents an investment of over 40 million pesos. Officials estimate that more than 333,000 residents will benefit from the enhanced security and improved traffic flow.
This new infrastructure underscores Playa del Carmen’s ongoing efforts to modernize its urban landscape while prioritizing the safety of both locals and visitors.

Community Response
While the municipal government emphasizes the project’s benefits—enhanced security, improved traffic flow, and urban beautification—some residents and local stakeholders have voiced concerns. Some of the questions raised include:
- Does this portal represent a multicultural society with Maya roots?
- Does it reflect the identity of our tourist destination? What sets us apart from Cancún, Tulum, and other destinations?
- Does this project make a cultural contribution that attracts investment to the area?
- Would it stimulate the artistic market?
- What does this structure represent, and what is the purpose of building it?
- Was the local artistic community involved in its design?
- Did the current government promote the participation of this community in the economic benefits this project represents?
Critics also question the allocation of over 40 million pesos for the portal, suggesting that these funds could address more pressing issues such as infrastructure repairs, public transportation improvements, or social services.
Additionally, there are apprehensions about potential traffic disruptions during the construction phase and the long-term maintenance costs associated with the advanced surveillance equipment. Some community members also express unease regarding privacy implications tied to the implementation of facial recognition technology.
Official Response from Solidaridad
In response to these concerns, Municipal President Estefanía Mercado has assured the public that the project underwent thorough planning and is designed to meet the city’s evolving needs. The administration emphasizes that the portal will not only serve as a security enhancement but also as a landmark reflecting Playa del Carmen’s growth and commitment to modernity.
As construction progresses, the municipal government has pledged to engage with the community, addressing concerns and providing updates to ensure transparency and public trust in the project’s development.
