Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A networking event with a charitable purpose will take place this Saturday, June 21, to support Luum Balicheo, an organization dedicated to animal welfare. The event, organized by the women’s business collective Fems Máster Mind, will combine professional networking with fundraising activities, including games and prizes.

Supporting Animal Welfare Through Business Connections

Chuzel Ot Hernández, president of Fems Máster Mind, explained that the group selects a cause each year for its fundraising efforts. "Fems Máster Mind is a women’s business collective that started in Playa del Carmen. Every year, we host an event for a cause, and this year we’ve chosen animal welfare because it’s one of the most overlooked issues by existing organizations," she said.

The event will begin at 7:00 PM at the International House language school, located on 14th Street between 5th and 10th Avenues in Playa del Carmen. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with entrepreneurs and business owners while participating in games and raffles. Ticket sales and on-site purchases will directly benefit Luum Balicheo.

"By attending, you’ll gain business connections, enjoy the activities, win prizes, and at the same time, contribute to this important cause," Hernández emphasized. Tickets are priced at 600 pesos and can be purchased by contacting Fems at 984 240 7482. Organizers anticipate at least 50 attendees.

Addressing a Growing Crisis

Sara Rincón Gallardo, president of Luum Balicheo, highlighted that the organization’s work extends beyond dogs and cats to include broader environmental protection. "We protect feral animals, wildlife, and exotic species, like the tigers we’re defending in Playa del Carmen. But the most abandoned animals are cats and dogs due to a lack of education, culture, and humanity," she stated.

Sterilization efforts are a key focus, as Quintana Roo faces an estimated 180,000 stray dogs, creating social, health, and economic challenges. Sergio León Cervantes, president of Empresarios por Quintana Roo, noted that the issue also affects high-end tourism, as visitors increasingly seek destinations that prioritize environmental and animal welfare standards.

"If we start caring—whether out of humanity, social conscience, or even economic interest—we can help mitigate the economic impact we’re beginning to feel and which will only worsen if left unaddressed," Cervantes said.

The Fems Máster Mind collective currently has 28 members and aims to expand its network while strengthening business alliances through events like this.
