Cancún, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Paseos del Mar neighborhood showed solidarity on Tuesday after a mother and her 12-year-old son died in an apartment fire early that morning.
Throughout the day, dozens of neighbors gathered at the scene to help clean and paint the damaged apartment. They donated furniture, groceries, and cash to the grieving family, who lost all their belongings in addition to the two lives.
Neighbors organized efforts to encourage more people across the city to support the family. They shared a bank account number (5579100352126211, under the name Gabriel Pascual, the father) on social media to facilitate financial contributions.
Public works employees also arrived to assist the father in removing charred furniture remains.
The fire occurred after midnight on Isla Guadalupe Street near Obsidiana Avenue. Preliminary reports suggest it was caused by an exploding gas tank that allegedly had a leak.
Neighbors immediately tried to rescue the occupants, but firefighters and paramedics confirmed the deaths of the woman and her son, who were trapped in the flames. Another minor and an elderly woman were injured and taken to a hospital.
