Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A municipal police officer in Playa del Carmen was killed early Thursday morning after being shot during an operation in the Villas del Sol neighborhood. Authorities confirmed the attacker, who opened fire on the officer, was later shot dead by responding state police.

Officer Killed While Lacking Protective Gear

The slain officer, identified as Juan Pablo Torres de la Cruz, was not wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the attack—a critical oversight that contributed to his death. The incident has sparked outrage among fellow officers and residents, who are demanding accountability for the apparent negligence.

Timeline of the Shooting

According to official reports, the events unfolded around 12:48 a.m. when municipal police responded to a domestic violence call on Costureros Street near Avenida Azulejos in Villas del Sol. Upon arrival, officers spotted a couple fleeing on a motorcycle with a minor. Police pursued the vehicle, which eventually crashed at the intersection of Avenida de las Cigüeñas and Avenida Azulejos.

As Officer Torres de la Cruz exited his patrol car, the motorcycle’s driver, identified as 30-year-old Magdaleno González Gómez from Tabasco, opened fire. González also shot at a state police unit that witnessed the attack, prompting officers to return fire and kill him at the scene.

Aftermath and Arrests

Paramedics from medical unit 21-B pronounced both the officer and the attacker dead. González’s wife, Asunción M. T., also 30 and from Tabasco, was detained and handed over to the State Attorney General’s Office. The minor accompanying the couple was placed under the care of child protective services (Geavig).

Calls for Investigation

Images from the scene confirmed Officer Torres de la Cruz was not wearing a bulletproof vest despite participating in a high-risk operation. Colleagues, family members, and citizens are urging authorities to determine who bears responsibility for the failure to provide essential protective equipment.

The case highlights systemic safety deficiencies within the police force, raising concerns about the risks officers face while on duty. The Playa del Carmen Municipal Public Security Secretariat and the Solidaridad City Council now face mounting pressure to address these lapses, which have left another officer dead and a family in mourning.
