Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Authorities evacuated more than 200 children from a daycare center in Chetumal on Wednesday after a faulty electricity meter began emitting smoke and sparks.
The incident occurred at the Ashanao daycare, located at the corner of Pucté and Calzada Veracruz streets in the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood, alarming staff, parents and nearby residents.
Civil Protection and Fire Department personnel responded to the report and ordered the children moved out as a precaution while crews inspected the electrical installation and ruled out any risk inside the building.
Daycare staff began calling parents to come and collect their children while emergency crews worked on the fault and verified the facility’s safety conditions.
No injuries have been reported so far. Officials kept the building under review to determine what caused the electrical failure and to establish whether activities could resume normally.
