Maya Train Project Advances with New Land Expropriation
On the occasion of its second anniversary, the Maya Train project is moving forward with a new land expropriation aimed at consolidating various sections of the railway circuit. The measure was formalized by the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), which declared a total of 26 privately owned properties in southeastern Mexico to be of public utility.
According to the declaration issued by Sedatu, the expropriated lands are located in sections 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 of the Maya Train, distributed across municipalities in the states of Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. Collectively, these areas total 44,447.31 square meters, which will be immediately incorporated into federal property for the development of railway infrastructure.
The properties are located in Palenque, Chiapas; in the municipalities of Candelaria and Calakmul, Campeche; in Mérida and Izamal, Yucatán; as well as in Solidaridad, Othón P. Blanco, and Bacalar in Quintana Roo. The largest land area corresponds to the state of Campeche, where 14 properties are located in Candelaria and two more in Calakmul, representing the most significant portion of this expropriation.
In Chiapas, two properties in the municipality of Palenque are included, while in Yucatán, one property in Mérida and three more in Izamal are covered. In the case of Quintana Roo, the declaration includes one property in Bacalar, one in Solidaridad, and two in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.
The declaration of public utility was initially published on July 18, 2025, with a second publication on the 21st of the same month. The expropriation includes not only the lands but also the constructions and installations that form part of the real estate properties, authorizing Sedatu to proceed with immediate occupation of the properties.
