Mexico Ranks Second Globally in Low Unemployment

President Claudia Sheinbaum posted messages on her social media accounts

Mexico City — Mexico will close the year as the world’s second country with the lowest unemployment, ahead of economic powers such as the United States, Germany, Australia, or France and only behind Japan, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated.

The president posted on her social media a list of 14 countries in which Mexico appears in second place with a percentage of 2.7 percent unemployment among the economically active population.

“We close this 2025 as the second country with the least unemployment in the world. The transformation yields results,” she affirmed.

The list shows Japan, with 2.6 percent; Mexico, 2.7; Germany, 3.8; Netherlands, 4; Australia, 4.3; United States, 4.6; Ireland, 4.9; Austria, 5.8; Italy, 6; Belgium, 6.4; France, 7.7; Sweden, 9.1; Finland, 10.3, and Spain, 10.5 percent.

On December 8, the director general of the Mexican Social Security Institute, Zoé Robledo, announced that there are more than 22 million workers incorporated into IMSS, representing the highest figure of formal employment in history.

“There is a new employment record, reaching 22 million 837 thousand 768 job positions affiliated with the institute, what we know as formal employment, it is the highest registration,” he highlighted in the presidential conference.

Formal employment in Mexico closed November with a new uptick by registering 48 thousand 595 new positions, an annual advance of 0.9 percent. At the National Palace, Robledo explained that during the year 599 thousand 389 jobs were generated, a growth of 2.7 percent in the same period of 2024.

On December 22, Sheinbaum emphasized that employment has increased, reflecting the strength of the national economy.

“This has to do with the strength of the Mexican economy and certainty, because otherwise there would not be investment in pesos… because they see it is a stable currency and there is stability in the country, otherwise this increase in employment would not be occurring. So, it is part of our economic model, which is macroeconomic strength and also support for the people,” she pointed out at the National Palace.

Meanwhile, the federal government highlighted that next year, with one day of minimum wage, that is, 315.04 pesos, workers will be able to buy 14.8 kilograms of tortilla or 6.5 kilos of egg.

On social media, it highlighted the increase of 154 percent in purchasing power in the country.

“With one day of minimum wage in 2026, workers will be able to buy 14.8 kilograms of tortilla, 6.5 of egg and 7.1 of beans, due to the strengthening of 154 percent in purchasing power. We maintain the commitment to protect the economy of Mexican families,” it emphasized.

In a comparative table, it said that this year 13.1 kilos of tortilla can be purchased with this salary, a figure that will rise to almost 15 kilos.

Regarding egg, one day of work reached this year to buy six kilos, while next year 6.5 can be purchased. In the case of beans, the figure will go from 5.6 to 7.1 kilos, according to the National Minimum Wage Commission.

On December 3, Sheinbaum announced an increase to the general minimum wage of 13 percent starting January first, going from 315.04 pesos daily, that is, 9 thousand 582.47 monthly, to 440.87 pesos daily, about 13 thousand 409 pesos per month.

“We have very good news: two great agreements that we made by consensus, unanimously: one, the increase to the minimum wage, and two, the reduction of the 40-hour week gradually,” highlighted the president at the National Palace.

Extends Invitation

On vacation at this tourist destination, the President assured that Acapulco is standing and invited the population to visit the port, which suffered damage after the passage of hurricanes in recent years.

“Look how well Acapulco is. Visit this beautiful port of the Mexican Pacific,” she posted on her networks along with a video of a tour of “the new Miguel Alemán coastal road” and the hotel zone.

“Acapulco is standing thanks to its wonderful people,” she said.

Sheinbaum will resume her morning conferences next December 29 after a three-day pause.
