Mexico Reports 135 Human Cases of Screwworm Infestation This Year

Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico has confirmed 135 human cases of screwworm infestation so far this year, with 25 new infections reported in recent weeks, according to health ministry data.

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System reported that the latest cases bring the year’s total to 135 affected individuals. The data covers three recent epidemiological weeks.

From January 4-10, authorities recorded 12 cases: seven in Chiapas, four in Yucatán, and one in Quintana Roo. During the week of January 11-17, officials confirmed 10 more infections: four in Chiapas, two in Yucatán, three in Oaxaca, and one in Quintana Roo.

Between January 18 and February 3, three additional cases emerged. These included a 69-year-old man in Chiapas and two men in Guerrero, aged 74 and 53 respectively. This marks the first time Guerrero has reported human infections from this parasitic disease.
