Mexico City — Mexico has been invited to participate in Earth Hour 2026, a global symbolic blackout initiative aimed at raising awareness about climate change and energy consumption.

The World Wide Fund for Nature, which organizes the movement, has scheduled the 2026 event for Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time. During this hour, participants are encouraged to voluntarily turn off non-essential lights in homes, businesses, and public buildings.

Recent social media posts and online portals have circulated information warning about a supposed nationwide blackout in March. Authorities clarified that this is not related to electricity service provided by CFE (Federal Electricity Commission), but rather a voluntary, temporary action for those who choose to participate in the environmental initiative.

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where more than two million people participated in the first symbolic blackout. Over the years, the movement has expanded to hundreds of cities worldwide, with governments, businesses, organizations, and citizens joining by turning off lights in homes, buildings, and landmarks.

The primary goal of Earth Hour is not immediate energy savings but rather promoting collective reflection about the environmental impact of daily actions and the importance of adopting more responsible habits.

In addition to turning off lights, participants can contribute by unplugging unused electrical devices, engaging in activities without electricity, or spreading awareness about environmental protection.

Officials emphasized that there will be no mandatory blackouts or electricity supply interruptions across Mexico. Participation is entirely voluntary, with no legal obligation to join the initiative.
