Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina, Semar) has confiscated 45 bricks of cocaine with an estimated street value of 14 million pesos (approximately $700,000 USD) near the coasts of Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen. Each package was wrapped in industrial-grade plastic and marked with the initials “CR7,” authorities confirmed.
Details of the Seizure
The operation was conducted during a maritime and land patrol by naval personnel assigned to maintain law and order in the region. According to an official press release from Semar, the seizure was carried out with support from an interceptor patrol boat, a Defender-type vessel, a smaller boat, and Marine Infantry units stationed in Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen.
During the patrol, authorities located and recovered 45 rectangular packages wrapped in black plastic along the shoreline. Each brick contained approximately one kilogram of cocaine. The narcotics were handed over to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Playa del Carmen for further investigation and official weight verification.
Suspected Destination and Cartel Tactics
Preliminary reports suggest the cocaine was intended for distribution in the Riviera Maya and Cancún, where it would likely have been sold in smaller quantities. Local authorities do not believe the seizure was a diversion tactic—a common strategy used by drug cartels to distract law enforcement while smuggling larger shipments through other parts of Quintana Roo. The origin of the drugs remains unknown.
This marks the first major drug seizure of the year along Playa del Carmen’s coastline. The confiscation deals a significant blow to cartels attempting to distribute narcotics among locals and tourists in the region.
The investigation into the seized cocaine continues under the jurisdiction of the FGR. No arrests have been announced in connection with the seizure at this time.
