Yucalpetén, Yucatán — The Mexican Navy, through the Naval Force of Mexico, reported that on July 16, as part of efforts to combat illegal fishing along the Yucatán coast, personnel assigned to the Ninth Naval Zone, in coordination with the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishing (Conapesca) and the Yucatán Secretariat of Public Security (SSPY), conducted maritime surveillance patrols in the coastal areas of Dzilam de Bravo and San Felipe.
Illegal Catch Confiscated During Surveillance Operations
During the inspections at sea, authorities detected two small vessels carrying approximately 500 kilograms of sea cucumber and 200 kilograms of Mayan octopus—species currently under permanent fishing bans. The operation resulted in the seizure of both vessels, the detention of five individuals, and the confiscation of prohibited fishing gear.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
The detained individuals and seized materials were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation. The marine products were placed under the custody of Conapesca.
Continued Efforts Against Illegal Fishing
The Mexican Navy emphasized its ongoing collaboration with federal, state, and local agencies to prevent illegal fishing and protect marine species under conservation measures in Yucatán.
