Courtroom scene with judge and defendant in Chetumal

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A man known as “La Ardilla” has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a murder committed during a robbery more than a decade ago, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Ángel Jesús García González was convicted of aggravated homicide in the death of a man whose identity has been withheld. The crime occurred on August 20, 2013, at a home on Juárez Avenue between Primo de Verdad and Venustiano Carranza streets in downtown Chetumal.

According to investigators, García González and an accomplice planned a robbery at the residence. While the accomplice stood watch outside, García González entered and spent time with the victim. He then let the accomplice inside, and together they subdued the man. García González held the victim by the neck while the accomplice immobilized his hands, causing his death.

After confirming the victim was dead, the pair stole gold jewelry and other valuables, loading them into the victim’s Volkswagen Lupo. They wrapped the body in black plastic bags and a sheet, then dumped it in brush near the Luis Echeverría roundabout in Chetumal.

García González later pawned the stolen jewelry, while his accomplice kept the car intending to sell it.

In addition to the prison term, a traditional criminal court judge ordered García González to pay 452,652.80 pesos (about $22,500) in fines, restitution, and damages.

The prosecutor’s office said the conviction was secured through strong evidence presented more than a decade after the crime.
