Mexican Caribbean — Every summer, the Mexican Caribbean welcomes hundreds of whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. These gentle giants migrate to Mexico’s warm waters to feed and reproduce. Notably, Mexico is the only country in the world with a protected natural reserve dedicated to this species: the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve, located in the northeastern Yucatán Peninsula.
This idyllic region is one of the best places globally to swim with whale sharks. The official sighting season has already begun, and here’s what you need to know about the experience, including costs and regulations.
When Is the Official Whale Shark Season in the Mexican Caribbean?
Though migration patterns vary depending on weather conditions, the whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean typically begins around mid-May and lasts until mid-September.
Where Can You Swim with Whale Sharks in the Mexican Caribbean?
The Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve spans approximately 1,460 square kilometers—roughly the size of Mexico City. This protected area stretches north of Holbox Island to Contoy Island in Quintana Roo. However, swimming with these giants is also possible off the coasts of Isla Mujeres and north of Cancún.
Note: The Mexican Caribbean isn’t the only place in Mexico where whale sharks appear. Sightings also occur in Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California Sur, from approximately October to April.
