Suspected Rat Poison Found Along Popular Playa del Carmen Dog-Walking Route

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents in several Playa del Carmen neighborhoods are warning pet owners after suspected rat poison was discovered along a public walkway frequently used by families and dog walkers.

The bright blue blocks were reportedly found in the park and green areas between the Esmeralda and Marfil residential developments in the La Joya neighborhood. Warnings have also circulated among residents of Allegranza and nearby communities.

According to the community alert, two pets became ill and remain under veterinary observation. It has not been officially confirmed whether the animals consumed the substance shown in photographs or whether the bait was deliberately placed to harm dogs.

Residents are being advised to keep dogs leashed and close by while walking through the area. Owners should prevent pets from eating food scraps, unidentified objects or anything found in the grass, beside sidewalks or near garbage.

Rodenticides can cause internal bleeding, neurological problems, kidney damage or other serious complications, depending on the active ingredient. Symptoms may not appear immediately and can include weakness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, pale gums, shaking, seizures or unusual bleeding.

Anyone who suspects that a pet has ingested poison should contact a veterinarian immediately rather than waiting for symptoms to develop. If it can be done safely, owners should photograph the substance or take its packaging to the clinic, but they should not handle unidentified bait with bare hands or attempt to make the animal vomit without veterinary guidance.

Residents have also been asked to report suspicious activity and additional bait found in parks or public green areas so it can be removed safely and the circumstances investigated.
