Cancun, Quintana Roo — Mexican boxer Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez was arrested Wednesday on the Cancún-Tulum highway after police stopped him for speeding and suspicious behavior, according to local reports.

Officers pulled over the vehicle and conducted a search, leading to the detention of the former world champion and several companions. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement clarifying the charges or the legal status of the 34-year-old fighter.

The arrest comes just weeks after Ramírez suffered a decisive loss to David Benavidez in Las Vegas, which cost him the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles and required hospitalization.

Ramírez made history in 2016 as the first Mexican to win the WBO super middleweight title and later captured belts in the cruiserweight division. However, his career has also been marked by off-ring incidents, including a 2022 arrest in Mazatlán for disturbing the peace at a private party.

Initial police reports identified the detainee as “Gilberto de Jesús N.,” fueling speculation about his identity. The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office is expected to release a formal statement soon.
