Mérida, Yucatán — The Mérida International Airport has surpassed 2 million passengers in the first six months of 2026, and the company that runs it says the total could double by year-end if the trend continues.
Héctor Navarrete, head of airport operator Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR), said the summer vacation season is drawing to a close, though final results have yet to be tallied. He said the airport is already preparing for winter, one of its busiest periods.
“We have already reached 2 million passengers in the first six months of the year,” Navarrete said. “We expect to double the figure.”
Navarrete said demand has kept the airport’s outlook positive, particularly with new flight connections on the horizon. He highlighted the upcoming route to Calgary, Canada, as an important step for expanding Mérida’s international connectivity.
“Calgary is very important to us because it’s the other side of Canada,” he said. “We have strong connections with Toronto and Quebec; now Calgary will be on the other side.”
With passenger numbers growing steadily, ASUR continues to work on the airport’s master development plan, with projects aimed at ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with demand. Navarrete said the strategy is to build capacity ahead of growth.
“First infrastructure, then growth,” he said. “That’s why ASUR always expands its infrastructure to handle the increase in passenger numbers.”
The summer season is expected to run until early September, with complete results to be released later. ASUR anticipates continued momentum at the Mérida airport through the second half of the year.
