Maya Train Station Faces Environmental Protests: Experts Criticize Ecological Damage

The environmental collective "Save me from the Train" staged a peaceful demonstration at the Maya Train station in the municipality of Solidaridad. Their aim was to highlight the environmental damage caused by this federal project. The protest took place on Sunday morning, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. Protesters gathered outside the station's gate, waving Mexican flags and holding banners that read "Ecocide" and "Without cenotes there is no life".

The demonstration caught the attention of tourists arriving at the station. Roberto Rojo, a biologist and environmentalist, criticized the authorities for their handling of the local vegetation destroyed during the construction work. He pointed out that the destroyed vegetation was replaced with plants imported from other continents, an act he described as ecocide. He argued that introducing non-native plants disrupts the local ecosystem, which was previously protected before the project began.

The protesters also expressed concern over the cyclonic mesh fencing installed around the construction site. They argued that it fragments ecosystems and has a significant, complex impact on local species. Furthermore, they claimed that the construction of the train has resulted in displacement of communities under the guise of "social justice". They also highlighted the loss of life among workers on the project.
