Riviera Maya, Mexico — The second day of competition at El Camaleón Golf Course in Mayakoba left mixed emotions for local fans. María Fassi secured her spot in the final round by finishing with a birdie on the 18th hole, carding an even-par round and a two-day total of 3-over par. She was the only Mexican golfer among eight competitors to advance, while the others—including Gaby López, Isabella Fierro, Clarisa Temelo, Fernanda Lira, Andrea Ostos, María Balcázar, and Carolina Rotzinger—fell short of the cut.
López Fails to Overcome Early Struggles
Gaby López, a crowd favorite and three-time LPGA winner, struggled to recover from a first-round 7-over par performance. Despite opening her second round with two birdies—finishing with four total—she closed with a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole. Her 152-stroke total ultimately eliminated her from contention.
“Playing at home always feels different, more intense, but I’m very grateful to everyone who made this possible,” López said after her round. “I gave it my all today, but it’s tough to make up so many strokes in one round. Golf is a game of momentum, and now it’s about continuing to learn, falling in love with the process, and staying optimistic. I’ll never tire of working hard and giving my best.”
Bae Leads Heading into Final Round
The tournament’s final round begins Saturday with American Jenny Bae atop the leaderboard at 6-under par. The 23-year-old delivered a near-flawless second round, recording five birdies against just two bogeys.
Tournament Aims for Global Recognition
Gustavo Santoscoy, the LPGA tournament director, emphasized efforts to establish Mayakoba as an international golf destination.
