Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa inaugurated the newly renovated Casa del Estudiante (Student House) in Chetumal on Saturday, providing housing and support for students from across the state so they can continue their education without interruption.
The project, which involved rehabilitation, construction, and equipment, represents a total investment of 24.5 million pesos ($1.3 million). The facility now accommodates up to 134 students, up from 120 previously, and includes fully equipped dormitories, accessible spaces for students with disabilities, nutritional and psychological care areas, and renovated common areas. A new dormitory building for young women was also added.
During the ceremony, Lezama, along with Verónica Lezama, honorary president of the DIF Quintana Roo, and Alma Alvarado Moo, director of the Quintana Roo Youth Institute (IQJ), unveiled a commemorative plaque and toured the facilities.
“In this different government, the story of each student matters to us. We are not looking for ways to cut corners or find money; we are a government that does not improvise and that carries out works that transform lives, with total transparency and ensuring that the people’s money returns to the people, closing inequality gaps,” Lezama said.
The governor urged students to pursue their dreams, complete a career, and embrace a better future, steering clear of self-destructive behaviors and violence.
Public Works Secretary Rafael Lara Díaz explained that after more than 20 years of neglect, the former student shelter has been reborn as a dignified, safe, and functional space for the youth of Quintana Roo.
