Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man has been formally charged with extortion for allegedly demanding monthly protection payments from a home maintenance worker who advertised his services on social media, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Jesus Emmanuel “N” was ordered to stand trial on extortion charges after a judge found sufficient evidence to proceed. The victim’s identity has been withheld.

According to investigators, the harassment began on March 19, when the victim started receiving phone calls demanding 5,000 pesos (about $250) each month. The caller threatened the worker with reprisals if he failed to pay, claiming to be a member of a criminal group and stating he knew the victim’s movements.

Fearing for his safety, the victim made two deposits into a bank account provided by the suspect before reporting the crime to authorities.

Following an investigation, prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant and presented evidence before a control judge, who ordered the suspect held on pretrial detention for up to two years or until the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.
