Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man and woman were found shot dead Tuesday afternoon in Cancun’s Tres Reyes neighborhood, marking another violent incident in the tourist destination.
The bodies were discovered in an area known as “Cristo Viene,” approximately 200 meters from the main Mérida-Cancún highway. Local residents passing through the area called emergency services to report the scene.
Benito Juárez Municipal Police officers responded as first responders and confirmed finding a man and woman lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. Red Cross paramedics arrived shortly after and pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Authorities said the woman, believed to be around 30 years old, suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and head. The man, of similar age, was shot in the chest. Both died instantly from their injuries.
The area was cordoned off as investigators from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office collected spent shell casings and began their investigation. Forensic experts from the Medical Examiner’s Service removed the bodies for transport to the morgue, where autopsies will be performed to officially determine the causes of death.
Federal agents and personnel from the Quintana Roo Citizen Security Department also responded to the scene.
The double homicide comes amid ongoing security concerns in Cancun. Earlier Tuesday, video circulated showing two foreign tourists being robbed at gunpoint in the city’s downtown area. Another man of Guatemalan origin was found dead with signs of violence in the Bonfil neighborhood, with authorities investigating whether his ex-partner might be involved.
