Mérida, Mexico — The Maya Train, considered the flagship infrastructure project of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been at the center of public debate since its announcement. Designed, according to the AMLO administration, to drive development in southeastern states such as Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, the initiative has faced criticism over environmental impact, cost overruns, planning flaws, and construction delays.

Although partially operational, reports of technical failures and low ridership have fueled skepticism about its ability to achieve its intended goals.

Megamedia Poll: Should the Maya Train Be Canceled?

In this context, the latest Megamedia poll asked users whether, given its poor performance, they believe the Maya Train should be canceled.

The majority responded affirmatively. Of the participants, 69.2% supported canceling the project, while 30.8% favored its continuation. Breakdowns by media outlets revealed nuanced perspectives:

  • Diario de Yucatán: 70.1% voted for cancellation, 29.9% for continuation.
  • ¡Al chile!: Opposition was higher, with 73% supporting cancellation.
  • La i: Reported similar results, with 69.3% in favor of termination.
  • Meganews (Quintana Roo): In contrast, 64.6% opposed cancellation, while only 35.4% agreed with ending the project.

Regional Discontent and Diverging Views

The poll reflects growing dissatisfaction in regions like Yucatán and Campeche, where promised benefits remain unclear. Conversely, Quintana Roo’s stance may be influenced by the project’s potential economic impact on tourism.

A graphical breakdown of the poll results by media outlet was provided, though the original article did not include specific visual data.

The Maya Train continues to polarize public opinion as operational challenges persist.
