Tulum, Mexico — The holiday season has fallen short of expectations in the community of Cobá, where authorities and service providers are seeking strategies to reverse the decline in visitor numbers. The local delegate, Ezequiel Maya Ascorra, stated that the number of tourists is "far below" what is typically recorded during this time of year.

Economic Impact on Local Businesses

The local economy depends almost entirely on tourism, meaning the drop in visitors directly affects businesses, guides, transport operators, and families who rely on this activity.

"There have been instances where businesses have closed for one or two days, sometimes even a week, before reopening. They depend entirely on tourism," added Maya Ascorra.

Efforts to Improve Cobá’s Appeal

In recent months, efforts have been made to enhance the community’s image and make it more attractive to visitors. These include cleanup initiatives, rehabilitation of public spaces, and the organization of cultural activities.

"We have worked very hard on Cobá’s image, all in the interest of bringing tourism back to our community," Maya Ascorra explained.

Hopes for Recovery

Service providers hope that with increased promotion of the archaeological site and its historical and cultural value, visitor numbers will rebound, reinforcing Cobá’s position as a key destination within Quintana Roo’s tourism offerings.
