José María Morelos, Quintana Roo — The Los Girasoles solar energy project, planned for the La Presumida community, has entered the environmental review phase, the General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk (Dgira) announced.

The project will convert solar radiation into electricity using photovoltaic modules installed on fixed structures. The budget for site preparation and construction is approximately 1.788 billion pesos ($103.6 million). The project area is in José María Morelos municipality, near the Muna-Felipe Carrillo Puerto state highway.

Los Girasoles will have a 30-month construction phase, a 30-year operational lifespan that could extend with panel upgrades, and a 12-month decommissioning period. It aims to improve the Yucatan Peninsula’s energy situation by reducing the historical deficit between consumption and generation.

The solar farm will have a nominal capacity of 110 megawatts, with an installed capacity of 125.4 MW and a storage system of 30-33% capacity for 2.5 to 3 hours, as defined by the National Energy Control Center (Cenace). Plans include installing 216,675 photovoltaic modules, each 610 Wp, on metal structures with solar tracking to maximize irradiation and electricity production.

During operation, the panels will capture solar energy and convert it to direct current via the photoelectric effect. Production will depend on weather conditions, monitored by a meteorological tower. Inverters will transform the electricity to alternating current, which will then be sent to a step-up substation and transmitted via a 115 kV line about 137 meters long to connect with the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) grid.

The project will cover approximately 242 hectares within the municipal area.
