Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The second day of activities at El Camaleón Mayakoba golf course left a bittersweet taste for the local audience. María Fassi finished her round with a birdie on the 18th hole, carding a par for the day and a total of 3-over-par across two rounds to make the cut, becoming the only Mexican golfer to advance to the final round.
Unfortunately, the rest of the national representatives—including Gaby López, Isabella Fierro, Clarisa Temelo, Fernanda Lira, Andrea Ostos, María Balcázar, and Carolina Rotzinger—fell short of the mark.
Gaby López’s Struggle to Recover
Gaby López, a crowd favorite and three-time LPGA tournament winner, was unable to recover from her first-round score of 7-over-par. Despite starting the day with two birdies—four in total—she closed the round with a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole. Her final tally of 152 strokes left her out of contention.
"Playing at home always has a different, stronger flavor, but I’m very grateful to everyone who made this possible," López said after finishing her second round. "I gave it my all in one day, but it’s tough to make up so many strokes in that time. That’s how the competition played out, and in the end, advancing wasn’t possible. Golf is a sport of moments, and now it’s about continuing to learn every day, falling in love with the process, and staying optimistic because I’ll never tire of working and giving my best in what I love so much."
Jenny Bae Takes the Lead
The final round begins today with American golfer Jenny Bae leading the tournament at 6-under-par. The 23-year-old from Suwanee, Georgia, delivered a near-perfect second round at Mayakoba, recording five birdies and just two bogeys.
Nataliya Guseva Cites Lorena Ochoa as Her Inspiration
Russian golfer Nataliya Guseva acknowledged that Mexican legend Lorena Ochoa, a former world No. 1, has been a major inspiration throughout her career. Guseva, who has followed Ochoa’s example since childhood, praised the Mexican star as a role model.
The tournament continues with high expectations as the remaining competitors vie for the title.
