Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has received a request for jurisdiction filed by Rodrigo N, nicknamed “Lord Cobarde,” who asks the ministers to resolve the criminal proceedings in which he is involved for the beating he inflicted on Roberto González in Playa del Carmen nine years ago.
The events occurred on January 20, 2017, and were captured on video. There is already a 10-year prison sentence against Rodrigo N for the crime of aggravated assault, a conviction announced at the time by the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo.
Because this sentence can still be appealed, Rodrigo N requested that the Court resolve the case definitively and unappealably, instead of federal magistrates from Quintana Roo.
The case is filed with the highest judicial body under case number 66/2026 for a request for jurisdiction, which in turn stems from a direct amparo trial of the First Collegiate Circuit Court of Quintana Roo.
Due to the appeals, Rodrigo N has not yet gone to prison, as the execution of the sentence is suspended.
According to the follow-up of the case by this media outlet, Roberto González was left permanently disabled and confined to a wheelchair after the beating inflicted by his aggressor. These facts were at least proven in the local judicial instance after a Trial Court in Playa del Carmen declared “Lord Cobarde” guilty in September 2024.
The dispute originated from a neighborhood quarrel between the two while living in the La Joya subdivision, south of Playa del Carmen, acts in which “Lord Cobarde’s” partner also participated, who was also sentenced for the same crime.
Nine years after these events, Roberto González has consistently posted on his Facebook social network that his situation worsens more and more, as the crime of which he was a victim also destroyed his family network. This criminal process attracted significant public attention at the national level due to the severity of the beating he received.
In the coming months, the Court ministers will determine whether to take jurisdiction of the criminal process; otherwise, the case file will return to Quintana Roo where magistrates of the First Collegiate Circuit Court will decide the fate of “Lord Cobarde.”
