Cancún, Quintana Roo — The LGBT+ community in Quintana Roo is working with the state electoral institute (Ieqroo) to establish safeguards that would prevent political parties from circumventing affirmative action quotas in future elections.
Linger Méndez Vidal, secretary of the State LGBT Parliament, said that in the previous electoral process there were cases of identity usurpation and that many parties chose to pay fines rather than nominate genuine candidates from the diversity community.
“We have to remind them that in the past national campaigns there was usurpation of the different affirmative quotas, and most paid the fine for violating that law. So with Ieqroo we are seeking security locks to guarantee that those participating in the new elections toward 2027 are the right and suitable people. In the case of the diversity quota, we are ensuring it is a verifiable person,” said Méndez Vidal, who also serves as coordinator of research and social project liaison in the Directorate of Attention to Diversity in Benito Juárez.
The municipal official stressed that the selected candidate must be openly aware of sexual diversity, as they will not promote people who remain in the closet or live hidden, since they do not share the daily experiences and problems of the sector.
“Although we have many rights in the Constitution and many labor rights, and Quintana Roo has opened up, there is still a lot of social work to be done,” she said. Therefore, anyone aspiring to represent the diversity community must have at least one year of social work and verifiable activist background.
Méndez Vidal noted that the commitment of future legislators must be comprehensive and for the benefit of all citizens, not limited solely to the agenda of the group they represent.
“Even though people are running as candidates from different quotas, remember that when they win and go to Congress there are different committees; just because I am the diversity or indigenous quota does not mean I will get the indigenous or diversity committee. Being promoted by the 4T does not mean that the work of every deputy is not to give input and work on all legislation in favor of the citizens of the state of Quintana Roo, but it is about giving importance to legislative work,” she concluded.
