Anibal N. being led into a courthouse in Cancun for an extortion hearing

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A judge has ordered pretrial detention for Anibal “N” on charges of extorting a public transport operator in the municipality of Benito Juarez, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office announced Sunday.

During the arraignment hearing, prosecutors from the Specialized Unit for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion presented evidence that led the judge to issue a formal indictment and impose preventive detention for the duration of the proceedings.

Anibal “N” was arrested June 22 after state investigators served an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in extortion activities.

Investigation into illegal fee collection from transport workers

According to the investigation, the suspect allegedly participated during 2025 alongside two other individuals in collecting illegal fees from public transport operators working near a shopping plaza on Tulum Avenue in Cancun.

Investigators say the alleged perpetrators demanded periodic payments from drivers in exchange for allowing them to work and pick up passengers, and offered supposed protection from a criminal group that authorities consider a source of violence in Quintana Roo.

The State Prosecutor’s Office said it will continue strengthening investigations to combat high-impact crimes and bring to justice those allegedly involved in extortion, which it described as one of the offenses most affecting workers, merchants, and service providers in Benito Juarez.
