Cancún to Open Inclusive High School With Teachers, 11 Students Enrolled

Cancún, Quintana Roo — An inclusive high school program set to open in Cancún has already enrolled 11 students and secured its teaching staff, a state official said.

Roberto Alejandro Sosa Casares, deputy director for inclusion in the state government, said the program will initially operate at the Eduard Huet Multiple Attention Center (CAM). It was created largely in response to requests from members of the deaf community who wanted to continue their studies.

“We already have the teachers who will teach the classes. Now we are organizing by disability,” Sosa Casares said.

He explained that the model organizes educational support according to each student’s characteristics and needs, with the goal of identifying and removing barriers they may face in class.

For students with hearing impairments, for example, communication is one of the main needs, so officials plan to rely on experienced teachers and support such as sign language interpreters.

“Depending on the special educational need that arises with the student, those are the barriers that we will be eliminating,” he said.

The choice of the Eduard Huet CAM as the first location is tied to the proposal’s origin, which came from the deaf community. Sosa Casares said the people who pushed for the project asked that teachers have classroom experience and knowledge of student needs. For that reason, the program will use teachers who are already working in education.

The deputy director did not set a limit on how many students can enroll, saying the goal is to serve everyone in the program’s target community. He added that the school year is expected to start at the same time as basic education classes.

Registration is being held at the Eduard Huet CAM, where the program will operate.
