Cozumel, QR — Island residents spent two days clearing what amounted to 40 tons of sargassum from a beach in Cozumel. The large-scale cleanup began on Friday and continued through Saturday.
According to Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, volunteers successfully carried out the second day of the massive sargassum removal for the 2025 season at Playa Chen Río. He reported that the effort resulted in the removal of approximately 40 tons of the marine plant.
The beach cleanup was coordinated by the Federal Directorate of Maritime Land (Zofemat), led by Irwin Batún Alpuche, and included the participation of more than 500 municipal employees, 162 Navy personnel, and 30 young military members.
Batún Alpuche noted that special care was taken during the sargassum cleanup in areas designated as sea turtle nesting sites. He expressed gratitude to all participants involved in the operation, stating that the removal of sargassum "continues to position the island as an ecological destination and strengthens the conservation of our flora and fauna as a community."
Several municipal agencies joined the effort, highlighting teamwork and environmental commitment to preserving the island’s natural beauty during the summer vacation season.
The Cozumel City Council reaffirmed its dedication to environmental conservation and promoting Cozumel as a clean, eco-friendly, and responsible tourist destination.
