Isla Mujeres Adds Mayan Sculptures to Punta Sur Park

Four new sculptures at Punta Sur in Isla Mujeres celebrating Mayan heritage

Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The Isla Mujeres Government inaugurated four new sculptures at the Punta Sur Sculpture Park, strengthening the municipality’s cultural identity and expanding one of the island’s most representative spaces. The ceremony was led by Municipal President Atenea Gómez Ricalde, who highlighted that the project is part of a comprehensive strategy to preserve heritage, promote art, and boost tourism development.

Punta Sur Expands Its Artistic Collection

With these additions, the park now totals 21 works and is directly integrated into the new tourist corridor that includes the Mirador Mar Turquesa and Hacienda Mundaca. The inaugurated sculptures are named Goddess Ixchel, Mayan Priest or X-Men, Flower Offering of May, and Dancing Woman, pieces that evoke symbols, rituals, and elements of the Mayan worldview, in addition to the spiritual dimension that characterizes Isla Mujeres.

During the event, the mayor emphasized that Punta Sur has become a point where art coexists with the natural landscape and historical memory, allowing residents and visitors to connect with the island’s cultural roots. She noted that the space has been recovered and rehabilitated after years of abandonment and is now maintained through permanent actions to keep it accessible and attractive.

Recovery of Public Space with Identity

Gómez Ricalde stated that these actions respond to a government vision aimed at creating living, safe public spaces with their own identity, capable of strengthening the sense of belonging while simultaneously stimulating tourism activity in an orderly manner.

The new works were created by sculptor Rosa María Espinola García, whose work provided a sensitive artistic interpretation coherent with the natural environment and historical discourse that distinguishes Punta Sur.

Cultural and Tourist Reference for the Island

With the inauguration of these sculptures, the Municipal Government reinforces Punta Sur’s position as one of Isla Mujeres’ main cultural and tourist references, promoting heritage care, pride in local history, and a sustainable projection of the municipality to national and international visitors.
