Isla Mujeres Fundraiser Aims to Help 300 Diabetes Patients

Business solidarity drives attention to patients with chronic diseases in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Two civil organizations are coordinating efforts with 85 businesses and individuals to raise funds and acquire supplies for the control and treatment of 300 diabetes patients next February.

During the year that is ending, 280 people with chronic diseases were attended to on January 22; however, throughout the annual period more than 600 actions were carried out for their benefit. For next year, it is planned to attend to at least 300 patients on the island, on a date yet to be defined in February, reported the organization Isla Diabetes Clinic.

According to the published list, 85 contributors are participating including restaurants, hotels, condominiums, tourism operators, businesses, and individuals. The collaborators offer prizes valued between 300 and 2,500 pesos, in addition to incentives in dollars, intended for the winners of the raffle scheduled for January 5 at a recognized establishment.

Geovany de la O Ávalos, member of the civil association Club Pro-Paciente Diabético, explained that they receive donations in kind under a transparent scheme in the collection and application of resources, in order to strengthen donor confidence.

He specified that the amount assigned to each restaurant, hotel, or service corresponds to the value of the gift, which can consist of discounts, courtesies, or benefits, according to what is offered by each benefactor.

He added that the solidarity contributions from establishments are made year after year, and all incentives are part of the January 5 raffle.

The next challenge is to motivate patients to control their condition through healthy eating, lifestyle changes, constant self-evaluations, and reducing the consumption of sugary drinks.
