Isla Mujeres, Q. Roo — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has implemented a successful sargassum management strategy. The initiative, carried out with immediacy, efficiency, and commitment, is executed through the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone agency (Zofemat).

The remarks were made by Mayor Gómez in observance of World Beach Day. "Although this phenomenon does not occur every day or on all beaches, in Isla Mujeres we act immediately every time it appears. This is thanks to the tireless work of the Zofemat crews, which include women and men fishermen who are part of the sargassum cleaning and removal program," stated Atenea Gómez.

The island's mayor highlighted that in the last four years alone, a total of 17,600 tons of sargassum have been removed. Of this total, 2,215 tons were collected this year, a result of the relentless work of Zofemat's crews, referred to as warriors.

Atenea Gómez reiterated the commitment to keeping the beaches of Isla Mujeres clean, orderly, and free of sargassum. She noted that Zofemat personnel now have uniforms, equipment, and work tools to reinforce beach cleaning daily.

She added that vehicles for transporting the sargassum and a backhoe to facilitate the removal of the macroalgae have also been acquired. This was made possible through the efficient management of public resources.

The mayor thanked the coordination between the three levels of government for reinforcing the strategy against sargassum.
